Her voice. Speaking Galactic. Warmth filled my chest, but not the sort I usually created. This was powered by excitement and anticipation. I wanted to take McKenna somewhere else in this labyrinth Vale and Glib had created and just listen to her speak. She could recite the parts of a spacecraft or the list of known planets.

I just wanted to listen to her. To hear her speak my name again now that she could talk directly to me. Would her voice still be as soft, as hesitant? I wanted Cortus to give her Phyrrian, to hear her talk to me in the language of my people. Ownership beat a second pulse through me.

Would she still glare at me the same way now that she could understand what I was saying? My heart throbbed almost painfully as I fought every urge and instinct to pull her against me and smooth my hand over her hair.

Cortus had told me to leave the human alone. Again and again, he’d told me, like I couldn’t be trusted. Like the sins of my race would reignite in me. Like I had no control.

And he hadn’t used her damn name once.

“Did you discover Ara’s location?” Glib had reverted to his earlier form and turned his annoying green face to me.

Surely, he no longer felt this appearance was the best way to relate to McKenna? Perhaps he wanted her for himself. A surge of jealousy roared into my head, whiting out my vision, and my hands tensed into tight fists.

But no.

I had to control myself. I waited for my emotions to recede, and I rolled his words through my head.

My sertava. I shook my head. “No, no, I haven’t located her yet.” My heart squeezed again, but this time in fear. “I should go back out there.” I didn’t know how long she had. Finding her was my most important mission.

I glanced around the room again, indecision tugging at me.

But I needed to protect these people, too. My crew. My friends. McKenna.

“I’m going to light a fire,” I said. “But you need to wait outside a moment while I create a chimney for the smoke.” I couldn’t look at them. I was too self-conscious now that McKenna could understand me. But I had to ensure they were all safe and warm while I continued my hunt for Sertava.

I started a small fire in the center of the room, enough to warm them, and went outside to melt a hole through the ceiling to let the smoke out. There was no point in warming them only to kill them with noxious gases.

“Doesn’t fire melt ice houses on Phyrria?” A crease formed between McKenna’s eyebrows as she considered the concept, and I withheld my chuckle.

“It will eventually, but it should hold for a night or two. And it should keep you all warm while I can’t.”

Her cheeks pinked, and my cock twitched.

“I should go.” I turned before I started wanting to stay.

Sertava was out there somewhere, and she wouldn’t survive more than a few nights on Phyrria on her own.
